WHAT IS BAR MODEL DRAWNG?
IT IS A PICTORIAL LEARNING APPROACH
Model drawing is an excellent approach used to solve word problems. Model drawing is versatile can be used for first grade addition problems or 5th grade pre-algebra problems. In the early school years, students can solve problems by acting out a problem or using concrete materials manipulatives such as toy apple or connecting cubes to represent the apples. Later, pictorial representations are used. As a student progresses on to higher grades, this would help student derive equations and also help them derive algebraic expressions and equations.
In the word problem such as the one below, drawing bar models helps students visualize the problem so that they are able to construct relevant equations. Drawing bar models also helps students gain a deeper understanding of the operations they many use to solve problems.
